The information in Einstein Archives Online can be retrieved by any
keyword search. The results of the search are presented with filters
for easy navigation of the database.
Tips for searching the database fields:
Digitized Documents
Digital images accompany some of the records. The images can be
displayed by
clicking on the thumbnails in the full display of the records.
The database includes a facet for Digital
Objects on the right side of the displayed search under Limit Search.
Perform any search and then click on the Digitized Documents. This will
bring the result search including only the documents with the original
digitized documents of Albert Einstein. Also, any result search, next
to the result list, there is a JPG icon to indicate the item has a
digitized document. Clicking on this item will display the full record
of the search. Clicking on the Thumbnail of the document will display
the document for paging.
Document Transcripts
Some of the manuscripts are accompanied by their corresponding
published and annotated versions, as printed in The Collected Papers of
Albert
Einstein (CPAE) produced by the Einstein Papers Project and published
by Princeton University Press. Some items also display their English
translation as published in the CPAE.
Transcripts can be found via limiting the search with the facet
Document Transcripts on the right side of the results list. The
transcripts can be also found in the full record view within the
Document Transcript tab. The PDF files will display on this tab.
Full Text Search index
Document Transcripts in German and their English translation can be search via the Full Text Search index.
Archival Call Number format
Items in the Albert Einstein
Archives are identified by Archival Call Numbers. Originally assigned by the editors of the Einstein Papers
Project, these Archival Call Numbers are made up of two parts, in
accordance with an item's position on the microfilm of the original
material produced in the late 1970's. These two numbers represent
the microfilm reel number and the sequential number within that reel.
Hence the item with Call Nr 28-010 was microfilmed
onto Reel 28 and is the tenth document within that reel. To search for
this item in the database key in 28-10, without leading zeros.
Dates and Date Ranges
Since many items in the Einstein Archives can presently be dated only
within a certain range of uncertainty, each item is assigned an
earliest date and a latest date. For items that are unambiguously
dated, the two fields are identical. For completely
undated items, the date range may be many years or decades.
Searchable fields
The
basic search and the ANYTEXT functions in the
advanced search retrieve data from the following fields: all fields,
full text search, persons, organizations, author, title and archival
call number. It should be noted
that a systematic revision of the original data was initiated only
recently and that, in particular, the contents field does not contain
any information for the majority of items. The full text search index
will search only in the printed or typed transcripts of the document.
Document Type
The archival documents are categorized according to this document type.
Thus, for each document it is indicated whether it is an Autograph,
Calculation, Transcript or one of many other document types.
The document type is displayed in the search result list.
Associated Documents
Some items include associated documents in the full
record display tab. These are links to records to the different types
of documents which are gathered together (photocopies, draft letters,
autograph letters and more).
Related Items
Some documents include a tab for Related Items gathering all published material related to the specific title record.
